DNA Testing in Practice

DNA Testing in Practice: Understanding Your Genetic Blueprint

As healthcare continues to move towards a more personalised approach, genetic testing has become an increasingly valuable tool in clinical practice. In recent months, I’ve had more and more clients enquiring about DNA testing,

Genetic testing offers a unique insight into how your body is naturally wired. While many symptoms can look similar on the surface, the way your body processes nutrients, responds to stress, detoxifies, and regulates hormones can vary significantly from person to person.

It can also highlight certain health susceptibilities or tendencies. However, this doesn’t mean these concerns will necessarily develop. Our genes provide a blueprint, but how they are expressed is largely influenced by factors such as nutrition, lifestyle, environment, and overall health. This is where we can take a more proactive approach — using this information to support the body in the areas it may need it most, and help reduce the likelihood of these tendencies becoming clinical concerns over time.

What Does DNA Testing Show?

DNA testing looks at small variations in genes known as SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms). These variations don’t indicate something is “wrong,” but rather that certain processes in the body may function a little differently.

In clinic, this can provide insight into a range of key areas, including:

  • How your body processes fats and supports metabolic health

  • Blood sugar balance and predisposition to metabolic conditions

  • Inflammatory pathways

  • Sensitivity to sodium (salt)

  • Co-enzyme Q10 production and energy support

  • Omega 3 and omega 6 metabolism

  • Vitamin metabolism and nutrient utilisation

  • Methylation pathways (including folate and key cofactors)

  • Choline metabolism

  • Caffeine metabolism

  • Potential sensitivities such as coeliac disease and lactose intolerance

  • Oxidative stress

  • Detoxification pathways (Phase I and Phase II)

  • Weight management tendencies

  • How your body may respond to different diet and lifestyle factors

Together, these insights help build a clearer picture of how your body functions — allowing your care to be more personalised, targeted, and supportive.

Genetic Susceptibility vs Expression

One of the most important things to understand is that your genes are not your destiny.

DNA testing can highlight potential susceptibilities or tendencies within the body, but this does not mean these conditions will necessarily develop.

How these genes are expressed is largely influenced by:

  • Nutrition

  • Lifestyle factors

  • Environment

  • Stress levels

  • Overall health status

This concept, often referred to as epigenetics, is central to how I use genetic testing in clinic. Rather than creating concern, the goal is to use this information proactively — to support the body in the areas it may need it most, and reduce the likelihood of these tendencies becoming clinical issues over time.

How DNA Testing is Used in Clinic

In practice, DNA testing is not something I recommend for everyone.

For many clients, foundational support through nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted supplementation is enough to create meaningful change. However, in more complex or long-standing cases, genetic testing can provide an additional layer of clarity.

It can be particularly helpful when:

  • Symptoms persist despite doing “all the right things”

  • There is a history of recurring or chronic health concerns

  • We are looking to refine and personalise treatment further

  • There is interest in preventative, long-term health optimisation, including cognitive health and healthy ageing

In clinic, I utilise tools such as Smart DNA testing and the Advanced Pathways test, selecting the most appropriate option based on the individual.

A Balanced Approach

While genetic testing can be incredibly insightful, it’s important that it is used thoughtfully.

The intention is not to overanalyse or overcomplicate your health, but to simplify and prioritise — focusing on the areas that will have the most meaningful impact.

Ultimately, it’s about moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach, and instead supporting your body in a way that is personalised, sustainable, and aligned with your individual needs.

It’s also important to view this information within the broader context of your health — including your symptoms, history, and lifestyle. Genetic testing is just one piece of the puzzle, and when combined with a thorough clinical assessment, it can help guide a more clear, practical, and supportive path forward.

Is It Something to Consider?

If you’ve been navigating ongoing health concerns, or feel like you’re not getting clear answers, this can sometimes be a helpful next step.

That said, it’s always something we decide together, based on your presentation, goals, and whether it will genuinely add value to your care.

Your body is not fixed — it is constantly adapting and responding to the inputs it receives. Genetic testing simply provides a framework to better understand those responses, so we can support your health in a more informed and individualised way.
